The decision is not the hard part. The move is. Choosing a community takes a few weeks of research, and then a whole life has to fit into three rooms in a single morning.
These guides are about that morning and the weeks around it. What to pack and what to leave, how to set up an apartment so it feels like a person's own home instead of a hotel room, which familiar objects do the most work, and how to handle the moment you drive away. We cover downsizing without spending three months on it, what to do with the house, and how to make decisions about furniture when nobody wants to be the one to say no to the dining set.
We also cover the adjustment, honestly. Most people have a hard first two weeks. That is normal and it is not a sign you chose wrong. Appetite drops, sleep is off, and phone calls home can be rough. There are things that help. Keep visits short and frequent at first. Let staff run the routine instead of stepping in for them. Bring the same photos, the same quilt, the same coffee mug. Watch for real red flags, like weight loss or a decline in mobility, and separate those from ordinary homesickness.
If a hospital or rehab discharge is driving the timeline, we have guides for that too. Discharge planners work in days, not weeks, and knowing what to ask them changes what options you get.
Move in day is also where we show up in person. Our Tuck In visit is four free hours on the day itself, unpacking, hanging pictures, meeting the staff, and making the first night easier.
For help planning the day itself, see move in support.
