Rehab vs skilled nursing vs assisted living: which one unlocks the rest?
Short-term rehab is therapy after a hospital stay, usually inside a skilled nursing building, and Medicare often covers part of it after a qualifying three-night admission. It buys you time and it buys strength.
Skilled nursing is round-the-clock licensed nursing for medically complex needs, wound care, feeding tubes, or someone who cannot transfer safely. Assisted living is help with bathing, dressing, medication, and meals for someone who is medically stable.

What should you have ready before you call?

- The discharge date the planner has given you, even if it may slip
- What the discharge planner is recommending, in their words
- The current medication list and whether oxygen or a wheelchair is involved
- Whether there is memory loss, wandering, or difficult behavior at night
- The monthly budget, plus any long-term care insurance, VA benefit, or Medicaid status

How fast can you actually move?
