A Beginner-Friendly Class for Families Facing Dementia

Dementia 101 is a free class for Colorado families and caregivers who are new to memory loss. In about ninety minutes we cover what dementia is, how to talk with someone who has it, how to handle hard behavior, and how to keep a home safe. No medical background needed.

What does the class cover?

  • Dementia basics

What dementia is, how Alzheimer's disease differs from vascular and Lewy body dementia, and what the stages actually look like at the kitchen table.

  • Communication tools

What to say when the same question comes for the ninth time, how to stop correcting, and how to redirect without a fight.

  • Behavior support

Why sundowning happens, what agitation is usually asking for, and how to respond to accusations and refusal without escalating.

  • Safety at home

Stove and driving decisions, wandering and exit seeking, medication storage, night-time falls, and the small changes that buy real time.

  • Next steps

What to raise with the doctor, when in-home help is enough, and the signs that mean it is time to look at memory care.

Who is this class for?

Staff who need the Certified Dementia Practitioner credential should look at our CDP certification training instead. Families who want ongoing help after the class usually join a caregiver support group.
